The Difference between Mechanical and Structural Steel Tube
Date:2018-04-23      View(s):3302      Tag:mechanical tubing, structural steel tube

Steel tube is used in a variety of structural and industrial applications, such as automobile transport, architecture, and construction. These steel tubes are fabricated from different variants of steel ranging from stainless, carbon, galvanized, or mild steel, depending upon the application requirements. Steel tubing is divided into two classes:  mechanical and structural, depending on its design. So what is the difference between mechanical and structural steel tube? Below are some points to consider while differentiating the two types of steel tubing. The comparison is made on the basis of application, specification, and shape.

Comparison between mechanical and structural steel tube

Application: Mechanical tubing is used in low stress and light gauge structural applications. These applications include conveyor belt components, solar panel supports, greenhouse structures, kitchens and restaurants, hospitals and medical equipment, and various types of industrial machinery. Structural tubing has high-stress handling capacity and is used various structural applications. This includes drilling and underwater platforms, roll cages, sign supports, bridges, buildings, and various other construction equipment.

Specification: Mechanical tubing conforms to ASTM A513 specification since it is produced to strict tolerances and specifications. On the other hand, structural tubing conforms to AS500 standard specification. This tubing must be strong and durable and is used in structural applications. Hence, tight tolerance and appearance are less significant.

Shape: Mechanical tubing is available in square, rectangle, round, or any custom shape. While structural tubing is available in square, rectangle, and round shape.

The above-mentioned points can help you differentiate between the two types of tubing. Selection of the right type of steel tubing will be influenced by factors like industrial application and working environment.
